The newest fire engine in Paden City's fleet is Engine 1, a
2003 Pierce Kenworth. This truck carries 1000 gallons of water and is
able to pump 1250 gallons of water per minute. Engine 1 is currently
the second due engine for fire related emergencies inside the City of Paden
City. Every 10 years the Paden City Vol. Fire Co. and the City of
Paden City replace the oldest fire engine to maintain the Insurance
Services Office (ISO) rating which lowers the citizens fire insurance
payments. This purchase keeps all first responding apparatus under 20
years of age and provides reliable equipment for the town and surrounding
areas. Currently Paden City operates 3 engines with 2 in first line
service and a third used by the department as a reserve truck.
Hose- Engine 1 carries 1200' of 3" supply hose used by the department
to hook up to hydrants within the city. The 1200' is carried in split
beds of 600' which allows two supply lines to be laid from the hydrant to
the truck. The rear of the truck also contains two pre-connected lines
for firefighting, the line on the right of the picture is known as a
"Attack" line and provides 200' of 1 3/4" hose with a straight tip nozzle
for delivering up to 200 gallons of water per minute to a specific area.
The second pre-connect is located in the middle of the hose bed and is known
as a "Blitz Line" and is used during heavy fire load situation where large
amounts of water are needed immediately. The line is a 2 1/2" hose and
is 200' in length and capable of delivering up to 500 gallons of water per
minute.
Air Packs- Engine 1 carries four Self Contained Breathing Apparatus
(SCBA). These air packs allow firefighters to enter dangerous
environments by providing them with 30 minutes of breathing air. Each
member of the Paden City Vol. Fire Co. is equipped with a personal air mask
which connects to the air packs and contain a "heads up" display which
allows a firefighter to see the amount of air he or she has left without
looking away from there current activity. The packs are also
designed for firefighter safety with a PASS device that alerts all personnel
when a firefighter has not moved for more than 10 seconds as well as a Rapid
Intervention connection that allows a second firefighter to provide air to
an injured firefighter should they run out of air in a dangerous
environment.
Generator- Each engine is equipped with a 5000 watt Honda generator
capable of running truck mounted flood lights and provide power to
ventilation fans carried on each engine.
Storage- All new trucks are designed with storage in mind to carry
the large amount of tools needed to perform fire and rescue duties.
Engine 1 carries 4 spare air bottles within its fender wells to maximize
storage on the Engine.
Master Stream- This device is used to deliver up to 1250 gallons of
water per minute to large fires. The master stream can be operated on
the truck or can be located several hundred feet away from the truck to
allow fire attack in different situations.
